Traffic

Traffic Coral Gables is known far beyond Miami-Dade County as a garden city with beautiful houses, tree-lined streets, historic architecture and quaint shops. The City Beautiful also is a regional center for culture, arts, education and commerce. These world-class amenities create traffic.

Fortunately, there are ways of calming traffic. Traffic calming has worked in Europe for decades. In the U.S., traffic calming has ranged from major city projects that have replaced freeways with grand boulevards to small town features such as roundabouts and traffic circles that slow down drivers while adding a landscaped amenity.

Traffic The City of Coral Gables has a procedure for residents to get involved in the process of slowing down cars and making streets friendlier for pedestrians and bicyclists. Controlling traffic is a complex procedure, but it can be dealt with in simple terms. Effective traffic calming makes streets safer-for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians-and becomes an amenity for the neighborhood.

The key to traffic calming success, as with any municipal project, is an active and informed citizenry. Resident involvement is valued and appreciated.

Traffic Watch

Red Road/SW 57 Avenue: Florida Department of Transportation will be commencing its sidewalk improvement program which will cover and affect traffic on Red Road/SW 57 Avenue. The goal of the project is to modify sidewalks and pedestrian signals in order to comply with the current requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The following are the affected locations where new sidewalks and crosswalks will be installed: Red Road/SW 57 Avenue from south of 60th Street to SW 58th Terrace on the west side of the road; from SW 54th Terrace to SW 51st Terrace on the west side of the road; from SW 48th Street to SW 40th Street on the east side of the street and SW 34th Street to SW 33rd Street on the west side of the street. The project will include installation of new signage and pavement markings, pedestrian signalization, relocation of existing light poles and relocation of landscaping on some of the construction sites. FDOT anticipates it will take 2 years to complete this project. Expect intermittent closures of sidewalks and intersections during construction and there may be some lane closures.
